What are the best baseball cleats?

Baseball requires a lot of equipment to play, and while high quality equipment such as bats and gloves are essential to performing at a high level, don’t underestimate the importance of reliable cleats. Baseball cleats give players the traction and protection they need to succeed on the diamond, but there are a few things to consider before purchasing a new pair.

How to choose the best baseball cleats?

Your cleats might be made with advanced technology, but they won’t serve you well if you don’t buy the right size. Wearing shoes that are too tight can be uncomfortable at best and cause pain, swelling and blistering at worst. Your cleats should fit snugly, but leaving room is essential to avoid soreness. However, be careful and make sure your shoes are not too big, as this can cause tripping and injury.

Types of cleats

There are two types of baseball cleats: molded and metal.

  • Mussel the cleats have rubber cleats and are more durable than metal cleats but do not provide the same level of grip.
  • Metal cleats are considered the standard for baseball cleats, especially at the highest levels. They provide great traction but are not as durable as molded studs.

Lawn shoes

Turf shoes do not have cleats or spikes like baseball cleats, but have a textured rubber pattern. Turf shoes can be worn for training drills but are not suitable for games as they do not provide enough traction for quick and agile movements on outdoor surfaces.

ankle length

The ankle length of your baseball cleats should depend on your position on the field, your physique and your skills. Many taller, stockier infielders prefer high or mid cut cleats because they provide more stability and ankle support. Faster flyers often prefer low shoes because they are lighter and do not restrict mobility as much as high or mid shoes.

Cost and durability

Your baseball cleats should stay usable for two or three seasons, but some players wear out their shoes much faster than others. The most durable baseball shoes cost between $60 and $150, but if you don’t play often and don’t want to spend too much money on a pair, you can find reliable cleats for $40 to $60.
