Adidas and Allbirds create sneakers with a carbon footprint close to 0

You don’t often see rival companies teaming up for the greater good. But Adidas and fellow shoe maker Allbirds put their differences aside to a new project. The joint initiative resulted in a running shoe with a carbon footprint close to zero. Considering the resources of the former and the long-standing commitment of the latter to sustainable products, they make a good team.

Adidas announced the new product on Friday, dubbed Futurecraft.Footprint. The company calculates the shoe’s carbon footprint at 2.94 kg of CO2e. (This number represents the amount of greenhouse gases used in the production of the shoe.)

This would be the lowest carbon footprint recorded for an equivalent product; For reference, the typical sneaker’s footprint hovers around 7.5 kg CO2e, which is significantly higher. Adidas claims that manufacturing the Futurecraft.Footprint results in 63% less emissions than its own Adizero RC3 sneaker.

Again, some voices remain skeptical the real impact of Futurecraft.Footprint; however, progress means progress. Extract from the product press release:

Based on adidas’ popular Lightstrike midsole and tested to the same performance standards, the FUTURECRAFT.FOOTPRINT midsole compound is reimagined with SweetFoam® made from Allbirds sugarcane, providing a natural low-content component. made of carbon … Representing another material collaboration, the new uppers material is made from 70% recycled polyester and 30% natural Tencel – a material made from wood pulp – for a smooth, lightweight upper that meets performance expectations with a very low carbon impact.

Per Adidas, Futurecraft.Footprint will be raffled off at some point in May. Right now, 100 pairs of sneakers will find happy homes. (Hopefully with people separating their recyclables!) Later this year, a lot of 10,000 will go on sale; spring 2022 is expected to see an appropriate global release.

For those who are not familiar, Allbirds is a New Zealand shoe company dedicated to sustainable manufacturing. They started operating in 2016 and are currently operating out of San Francisco. This team with Adidas could mean big things for the relatively young company.
