Following frequent Nike collaborator Travis Scott, Virgil Abloh has released a series of sneakers featuring the Swoosh this year, with more to come. After launching an Air Jordan 5 and an Air Jordan 4 for women, the designer’s Off-White brand is now switching to Nike’s Air Jordan 2 Low model, offering two shades of sneakers.
This year marks the 35th anniversary of the Air Jordan 2, which debuted in 1986. Created with high-end luxury in mind, the sneaker was known for its rich leather upper, lizard-style details and its notable absence from Nike Swoosh. Here, Off-White kept the traditional features of the Air Jordan 2 Low, while ceremoniously adding Michael Jordan’s signature to the design – reminiscent of how he signed his own pairs and gifted them to children after games. The autographed detail is a first for the model and all previous Off-White collaborations.
Better with age – Abloh’s redesign of the iconic sneaker arrives in two color palettes; one wearing a white base with red accents and the other black with blue accents. Both shoes feature Off-White’s signature sans serif font branding, branded ‘laces’ and exposed foam collars. Abloh’s famous lace zipper adorns the white AJ2 in a luminous cream, while it makes more of a splash on the black sneaker, dressed in bright orange.
Recognizing the age of the Air Jordan 2, both shoes feature “pre-crumbled” soles, making the midsoles look like they’ve been repaired over time. On the White and Red pair, the midsoles have been yellowed, while the Black and Blue offer washed-out black midsoles filled with translucent orange.
Back to the 80s – To further commemorate the silhouette’s 35th anniversary, Off-White and Jordan Brand worked together on an accompanying clothing capsule. Basketball clothes, T-shirts, hoodies, caps, shorts, pants and more T-shirts – sports vests already layered on them – should come out with the sneakers. In retro fashion, the green and gray clothes feature reflective details and a significant amount of windproof material, along with Off-White and Jordan Brand designs.
The Air Jordan 2 sneakers and clothing capsule will launch on November 12. Available on SNKRS – and globally via Atmos – the commemorative shoes sell for $ 250 each, reinforcing their collectable status. There is no better way to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the Air Jordan 2 than to buy another pair.
