Sony, owner of EVO, has patented an esports betting system – Critical Hit

It’s 2004, and I’m trying to imagine what it would be like if esports had proper salty bookies back then, accepting bets on Street Fighter and Smash Bros. matches. “What, you want to bet everything on Daigo beating Justin Wong in the Evo semi-final?” You’re a crazy kid, ”said the crisp bookie with a Bronx accent. “Of course I’m going to give you a five-to-one chance, it’s not like he’s going to pull off a miraculous last-second save with his weak cornering skills.”

Hindsight is a bastard, but I’m willing to pour some cash into Street Fighter’s next round, something Sony may be working on now that they’ve patented their own “esports betting system.” Spotted by Game route, the patent was filed on May 13 and has the following description:

The odds for various proposals regarding the play of a computer simulation are determined and presented to a spectator for pecuniary or non-pecuniary betting purposes. Odds can be determined using past play analyzes, or can be determined by imitation [sic].

So basically Sony is looking to put in place a way for gamers to view games and put money into them, using the word “pecuniary”. There is also the possibility that players will be able to bet with in-game currencies, which will likely turn out very well at a time when the debate over video games having gaming mechanics has heated up over the past year or so.

While most laws focus on loot boxes and how they created a false religion that revere RNGesus, people have started to worry about how these game mechanics can be harmful to a youngster. age. And for your wallet, therefore, I would advise you to enable two-factor authentication before your kids bet the house on a few spins of Mortal Kombat 11 by mistake.

Sony has a number of patents in development, and this one is likely to see some sort of movement since the company bought esports’ biggest fighting tournament, EVO, in March. A new EVO event is planned for August and I feel lucky. Darryn needs a new pair of shoes after his last betting spree that required him to eat Converse canvas for a few weeks! By the way, goes very well with Sriracha sauce.
