* Cheshire High School Girls Swim and Dive held a fundraiser for a sneaker drive throughout September. For this project, Laura Squillante from Cheshire was assisted by junior athletes and parents, Rosanne Tejeda from Cheshire, Principal Mary Gadd and CHS staff, Schools Superintendent Jeffrey Solan and community partners, according to an article in the Cheshire Herald. Junior swimmers Vanessa Squillante and Somya Gulati have taken on leadership roles with coaching. The Rams won funds based on the total amount of sneakers collected. The proceeds were used to support Senior Night on October 17th.

* Eighty Eastern Connecticut State University students received their undergraduate degrees in the summer of 2021. Local students were among the graduates.

Hamden: Kyle Goodwin graduated with a BA in General Studies in General Studies. Ryan Jackson graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology. Symone O’Hara graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Women and Gender Studies. Michael Tyler graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in History.


New Haven: Chol Malak graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science. Luis Rodriguez graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science.

West Haven: Jaime Edwards graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Social Work. Mahmoud Hal houssine holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Information Systems.

* Tarris Murphy of Hamden was inducted into the University of Maryland Global Campus Chapter of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation’s oldest and most selective academic honor society for all academic disciplines. Membership in Phi Kappa Phi is by invitation only for the top 10% of top senior and graduate students and 7.5% of juniors.
